This is one problem with a walled garden as a de facto standard -- it's security by obscurity, without the transparency or peer review of an open architecture. In the case of Facebook, I believe they use OAuth which is a standard protocol for third party authentication. But the controls, if any, inside of Facebook are not public knowledge.

Because of that obscurity nobody can speak to Facebook's internal security measures for securing personal data, or what procedures Facebook uses to prevent their employees from stealing or selling personal data.

Don't forget that Mark Zuckerberg himself infamously used the Facebook accounts his early users to hack email accounts at the Harvard Crimson. Not exactly the kind of person you want managing your personal data.

Do you think Facebook has the security protocols and encryption functionality to be a truly secure authentication layer?

I used to be a bit of a business process analyst over 10 years ago when I worked for a company that used Lotus Notes for email. Lotus Notes at the time was tops at security and encryption. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a software developer, I just worked with them and used Lotus Notes features to secure database login, edit vs read only rights, and access to particular data, etc.

Noah! Good to hear from you. Send me an "electronic mail" if you're ever in Westchester or the city. We're past due.

One of the most interesting landmarks along the Brooklyn waterfront. Then again one can only imagine what sorts of awful things have leeched into the ground. I hope they keep the sign anyway.
